Before the Migration Tanka

After the wind has stripped all
the leaves from the limbs,
scattering them on the ground,

how much easier to see the birds
flocking the trees in feathers.

glorious. it reminds me of the one by masahide in which the barn burning down improves the view of the moon.

I know that Jim Tipton, my tanka guru, would suggest cutting it in about half, something like this ...
